The Five Best Features of a Digital Video Recorder

by Adela Abramowitz | Oct 27, 2021 | Business

A few years back, no one had heard of DVRs. Now, we use them to record our favorite shows, so we can watch them when it’s more convenient.

We also use DVRs for security surveillance.

A Digital Video Recorder (DVR) is an electronic device that records video in a digital format to a disk drive, flash drive, memory card or other local storage device.

Digital recorders configured for physical security applications record video signals from Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras for detection and documentation purposes.

A DVR CCTV system provides a multitude of advanced functions over VCR Technology including an easier ability to search. There is also much more control over quality and frame rate allowing disk space usage to be optimized, and the DVR can be set to overwrite the oldest security footage should the disc become full.

In some DVR security systems, remote access to security footage using a PC can also be achieved by connecting the DVR to the customer’s network or the internet. DVRs represent a cost-effective flexible solution that allows users to address their current needs with the ability to meet future demands.

Below are the five best features of a DVR:

  1. Customers can find the event they need quickly. A DVR has the ability to search by event, date and time. Individual camera footage can be reviewed so you can look up a particular event.
  2. A DVR provides improved video image resolution. When choosing a DVR for surveillance, check if the cameras have a zoom feature. It is also important to consider the quality of the lens and the frame rate of the video streaming. Most DVRs also feature night time viewing because most thefts do not occur during the light of day.
  3. DVRs record on motion to save space and maximize recording time. Typically CCTV Cameras will record on motion only. This allows you to save space on your DVR. Combined with a security alarm system, this motion feature will help you see who is moving in the secure area when an alarm is triggered.
  4. Interactive Monitoring allows you to have 24/7 access to the surveillance system through your Internet connection. Cameras can be viewed through an app or through a desktop PC via the DVR Software.
  5. A DVR with CCTV can prevent crime. Cameras recording to a DVR serve as a great deterrent for potential thieves. Any recorded footage can be used as evidence. By having these features in place, you and your employees can feel safer.

You might not use your security surveillance DVR to record TV shows. But just like the DVR for your TV at home, your security DVR at work can save you time recording critical events around your facilities.
